Updated Pap Guidelines

Women’s Health Care, SC is changing our recommendations for pap screening in low risk women (i.e. women with no history of cervical dysplasia). This change is due to the recent update of guidelines by the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Cancer Society, and the US Preventative Services Task Force.

Waukesha gynecologist providing pap screening for women of all ages

Women less than 21 years old

no screening is recommended

21-29 years old

screening with pap testing every 3 years

30-65 years old

screening with pap testing and HPV testing every 5 years
OR screening with pap testing every 3 years

Over 65 years old

screening can be discontinued after adequate negative prior results

We still recommend that you see your provider on a yearly basis for a well-woman exam. Pap testing only screens for abnormal cervical cells, it does not address your overall gynecological health. A complete history and exam are necessary for evaluation of your pelvic organs, general health, and medication management.
